Equipment

  • Small saucepan or stovetop coffee pot
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Stirring spoon
  • Coffee mug

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon ground coffee
  • 180 ml hot water
  • 45 ml dark rum
  • 1 whole clove
  • ½ star anise
  • 1–2 teaspoons brown sugar (or to taste)
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients in Pot
Add 1 tablespoon ground coffee, ¾ cup hot water, 1–2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1 whole clove, and ½ a star anise to a small saucepan or cezve. Stir gently to blend the coffee and dissolve the sugar.
  • Brew and Infuse Flavors
Place the pot on the stove over medium heat. Allow it to slowly heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Let it bubble lightly for 3–4 minutes to extract the coffee and let the spices infuse into the liquid.
  • Add the Rum
Remove the pot from heat. Stir in 1½ ounces (45 ml) of dark rum and let the mixture sit for about 30 seconds, allowing the alcohol to warm without boiling off the aroma.
  • Strain and Serve
Pour the hot coffee mixture through a fine mesh strainer into your favorite mug, catching the spices and coffee grounds. For a finishing touch, top with a dollop of whipped cream if desired. Serve immediately while warm and aromatic.
